Veterinary Technician
Samantha grew up in Niles, Michigan with her parents, brother, sister, and a wide variety of family pets. She’s been caring for four-legged companions ever since she can remember; the hours she spent watching Animal Planet’s Emergency Vets only deepened her fascination! Samantha gets to satisfy her passion on a daily basis as one of Maple City Animal Hospital’s Registered Veterinary Technicians.

Samantha began her path in veterinary medicine by volunteering with a local shelter and shadowing at a small veterinary clinic in her hometown, taking prerequisite courses in veterinary care at Southwestern Michigan College at the same time. She then moved to Michigan City, Indiana to earn her Associate’s degree in veterinary technology from Brown Mackie College.

In 2014, Samantha joined the team here at Maple City Animal Hospital as a Registered Veterinary Technician. Medically, she has a particular fondness for laboratory work and especially likes examining samples under the microscope. Samantha is also passionate about rehabilitating abandoned young pets, and even plans on obtaining her wildlife rehabilitation permit in the future!

Samantha has been married to her high-school sweetheart for more than 10 years, and together they have three rescued cats: Dexter, who considers himself a professional mouse-hunter; Morgan, who is obsessed with water and especially likes to play with the bathroom faucet; and Odin, who loves to play fetch like a dog. In her time away from work, Samantha can be found visiting the area’s parks, exploring Lake Michigan during the summers, and tending to her flowers and plants at home.
Lakisha always had pets while growing up, and she’s felt a drive to help them stay happy and healthy ever since she was young. The day that she and her sister rescued an injured kitten, cleaning the poor critter’s wound and nursing it back to full health, sealed Lakisha’s fate: ever since, she knew that she would one day help animals professionally!

Lakisha is originally from Chicago, Illinois and began her veterinary journey by volunteering at local animal shelters. It wasn’t long before she applied to become a Kennel Aide and help pets hands-on; eventually, she worked her way up the ladder to become a Laboratory Assistant. Lakisha jumped into the world of grooming while serving at a local pet store, and wound up attending grooming school to become a certified Pet Stylist! She’s been helping pets to look and feel their best ever since.

After working with another local grooming salon for a time, Lakisha was thrilled to join the Maple City Animal Hospital family in February of 2016. She finds that she particularly likes to soothe nervous or anxious animals during their visits to the hospital; grooming these companions successfully is especially rewarding for her!

When she isn’t doting on pets here at the clinic or giving her time to animal rescue efforts outside of work, Lakisha enjoys spending time with her dog at home. She shares her life with Hercules, a South African Boerboel who loves everyone he meets and is always ready for a vigorous petting session.
Veterinary Assistant
Kasara grew up here in LaPorte as the oldest of six children. In addition to watching over her siblings, she was constantly bringing in all the stray animals she could find—caring for others is simply in her nature! Kasara is one of Maple City Animal Hospital’s Veterinary Assistants.

Kasara joined the hospital family in 2007 as a Kennel Assistant; it wasn’t long before she wanted to learn more. She was trained to become the head of the kenneling department, then transitioned into Veterinary Assistant work. Kasara has been tending to the area’s pets in that capacity ever since—she finds that she particularly likes to educate local pet owners on the best care methods for their companions, and she gets a special satisfaction from completing a thorough dental cleaning on a dirty mouth.

Karasa is engaged and has two wonderful children, Brock and Harlynn. The family shares their home with a cat, Jill, rescued from right here at Maple City Animal Hospital.
Christine was a client here at Maple City Animal Hospital before she was an employee. When an opportunity arose for her to use her background in medicine to better the lives of pets, she jumped at the chance! Christine has been a veterinary professional ever since, and is proud to serve the pets and their loving owners of the area as one of the hospital’s front-desk receptionists.

Christine is a Chicago native and attended college to earn a degree in biology. She worked in the human healthcare field, helping patients at a local hospital for 26 fulfilling years, before transitioning into animal care. Christine first signed on here at the clinic as a dog bather, serving in the grooming department for a number of years, before becoming a receptionist.

Around the hospital, Christine loves to help reassure clients when their beloved companions require care and celebrate when new pets are brought into the world. She especially likes sharing fun pet stories with animal owners just like herself!

Christine has two grown children and five wonderful grandchildren, all of whom live in the Chicago area. At home, she has a pair of Golden Retrievers named Keen and Kindle, and regularly trains her dogs for field work. (She even serves as a judge for Retriever Hunt Tests in the Midwest!) When she isn’t spending time with family or her dogs, Christine likes to garden, read, sew, quilt, and cook.
Head Receptionist
Andrew has always had a soft spot for animals. Coupled with his background in customer service, working in an animal hospital simply makes good sense! Andrew serves as Maple City Animal Hospital’s Head Receptionist.

A LaPorte native, Andrew joined the Maple City Animal Hospital family in January of 2016. His favorite part of every shift is getting to meet new animal owners and pets, and nothing beats seeing a client reunited with their happy, healthy four-legged companion.

Away from the office, Andrew enjoys drawing, playing video games, working with computers, and spending time with his cat, Jinx. Jinx’s favorite pastimes include drinking running water from the faucet and stealing Andrew’s food whenever she gets the chance.
Dr. Janet Weiss
Owner, Veterinarian
Dr. Janet Weiss felt drawn to her family pets ever since childhood. She wanted to know what made them behave the way they did, how their bodies worked, why they purred or barked… she’s felt an obligation to help care for animals for as long as she can remember! Dr. Weiss’s passion never wavered—now, she’s been tending to the pets and pet parents of LaPorte for over 20 years.

Dr. Weiss was born in Colorado but grew up here in LaPorte with her parents and two brothers. She attended a regional Purdue campus for her pre-veterinary studies, then spent a year working as a Kennel Assistant and later as a Veterinary Assistant and Grooming Assistant before securing a spot in Purdue University’s veterinary studies program to earn her Doctorate.

Dr. Weiss completed an externship in a Chicago-area exotic pet practice her senior year, then accepted a position under a local veterinarian with whom she had spent a summer assisting on farm calls. She served in that capacity for the next four and a half years, running the small-animal portion of the practice and also helping out on large-animal cases and emergencies, before securing a small-business loan and purchasing what would become Maple City Animal Hospital from the previous owner. Dr. Weiss took over the reins in 1996 and has been the owner, chief veterinarian, and manager of the clinic ever since!

One of Dr. Weiss’s favorite parts of veterinary medicine is getting to see cherished pets grow up over the years and become integral members of the family. She’s also fond of the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of her work; after all her years of practicing animal care, she still finds new mysteries to solve.

When she isn’t tending to pets’ needs here at the hospital, Dr. Weiss enjoys trying out new recipes, crafting, solving puzzles, reading mystery novels, gardening, and scrap sewing. She shares her home with a pair of senior-citizen cats, both adopted from right here at Maple City Animal Hospital: Sonny’s favorite pastime is staring and purring at Dr. Weiss to try and communicate what he wants; Celeste is the ultimate lap-cat and prefers to be in physical contact with Dr. Weiss as often as possible.
