Dog Grooming Mistakes

Is your canine pal fond of baths? Chances are, probably not. However, regardless of what Fido thinks about his beauty sessions, they are definitely necessary. While bathing your pup isn’t exactly rocket science, there are definitely some ‘faux paws’ that you would want to avoid. A Michigan City, IN vet lists some key ones below.

Shaving Fido

While some dogs are more comfortable in summer with a cool ‘do, this is not an option for all pups. If Fido has a thick coat, shaving him may actually damage his fur!

Overbathing

If you bathe your furry best friend too frequently, you may end up stripping the protective oils from his coat. This could leave him looking dry or even frizzy! How often Fido requires baths will depend on the type of fur he has. If you aren’t sure, check with your vet.

Harsh Products

Never use human shampoos on your canine buddy. These may be too harsh for your four-legged pal. It’s also best to avoid anything with really harsh scents. That may be overpowering for Fido’s sensitive nose!

Incomplete Rinsing

Always rinse well! If you don’t take the time to thoroughly rinse those suds up, they could dry onto Fido’s skin and fur, which can cause irritation.

Soap In The Eyes

No surprises here: this is no more fun for Fido than it is for us! Consider using a washcloth on that furry face.

Not Making It Positive

Bath time may never be Fido’ s favorite thing, but he should tolerate it. If you have a puppy, you definitely have the upper paw. Take time to teach little Fido that those beauty sessions are just part of a dog’s life!

Attempting Medical Grooming

Some of our canine pals need a little extra TLC when it comes to their beauty care. For instance, your vet may recommend ear hair removal for some pooches. This type of grooming is called medical grooming, and should only be done by professionals.

Never Taking Him To The Groomer

Even if you plan to wash your four-legged friend at home, it’s still good for him to be familiar with going to a groomer. Getting him used to this now may make a huge difference if you decide to start taking him to a groomer later!
