Fall is just about here! As the kids head back to school and the weather cools, many people are storing away summer things and decorating for autumn. Your feline pal will be more than happy to ‘supervise’ these seasonal chores. However, this can be a dangerous time of year for Fluffy. You’ll need to take some precautions to keep your frisky furball safe. A Michigan City, IN vet discusses some fall danger for cats below.
Weather
Temperatures can plummet quickly at this time of year. Make sure Fluffy has lots of comfy napping spots to curl up in. Kitties love store-bought beds, but they’re also pretty happy dozing off on folded blankets on chairs or ottomans. Your feline buddy will probably also appreciate thermal beds or blankets, which really hold warmth.
Darkness
We can’t overstate how dangerous the Great Outdoors is for Fluffy. Cars, wildlife, and weather always present serious dangers to cats. In fall, you’ll also need to add reduced daytime to the list. It’s going to start getting dark earlier and earlier. If you let your kitty out, limit her excursions to the daylight hours.
Halloween
Halloween is, unfortunately, one of the most dangerous holidays for kitties. Black cats are particularly at risk, because of old superstitions associating them with black magic and witchcraft. The increase in traffic also adds to the risk. Keep Fluffy indoors for several days around Halloween.
Chemicals
Antifreeze is a major hazard. People often fill their cars in autumn, which can result in puddles. The chemicals in antifreeze are deadly to pets, but unfortunately have a taste many like. Look for a brand that is marketed as pet-safe. It’s also best to clean up spills right away. Other dangerous chemicals include fertilizers and rodenticides. Your furry pal could ingest these poisons just by walking through patches that were recently treated and licking her paws and legs!
Decorations
Keep your playful pet in mind when decorating. Any candles should be placed well out of reach of those cute paws. This also applies to anything small, sharp, or breakable, and items with strings and wires. Consider Fluffy’s comfort as well. That mechanical screaming zombie may not be a huge risk, but it could frighten your kitty!
