Happy Healthy Cat Month

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Kitties are known for being quite easy keepers. Fluffy will spend most of her time sleeping, doesn’t need to be trained, and will use a litterbox to see to her needs. However, your pet isn’t quite as self-sufficient as you may think. In fact, cats need great care to truly thrive. A local Michigan City, IN vet offers some advice on keeping your feline pal happy and healthy below.

Good Food

Good nutrition is the cornerstone for any proper cat care regimen. Offer your kitty an age-appropriate food that suits her lifestyle and health. Just don’t let your feline friend meowpulate you into overfeeding her!

Clean Water

Hydration is important for all animals, and kitties are no exception. Make sure that your furball always has fresh, clean water. Mamy cats prefer to drink running water, so you may want to offer Fluffy a fountain.

Veterinary Care

Given the option, your furry buddy would probably scratch this one right off the list. However, Fluffy needs regular veterinary care to be healthy. Exams, vaccinations, parasite control are all important. (We also recommend that kitties be fixed and microchipped.)

Entertainment

This may seem a bit contradictory, as we know that many cats love doing as little as possible. However, even the laziest furball needs some sort of mental stimulation. Offer Fluffy lots of toys to pounce on, and take time to play with her. Your feline buddy will also appreciate having a window seat, where she can sit and watch birds and squirrels.

Comforts

It doesn’t take much to make your home a kitty luxury palace. Set out lots of comfy beds, and make sure your furball has access to a comfy window seat. Kitty furniture will also help.

Clean Litterbox

Kitties are very clean, so it’s no surprise that they also like their powder rooms kept that way. We recommend scooping daily, and replacing the litter once a week.

Lap Space (On Demand)

Cats have some pretty adorable ways of showing affection … such as by sleeping on us. If your pet is cuddly, let her snuggle up on you. Even furballs that aren’t particularly affectionate enjoy it when their humans pay attention to them.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your local Michigan City, IN animal clinic, we are here to help!
