Things to Consider When Adopting an Exotic Pet

Are you considering adopting an exotic pet? More and more people are opting for more unusual pets. However, there are definitely some things to consider before you decide. A Michigan City, IN vet goes over some of them below.

Housing

Exotic pets often have very specific housing needs. Some may require a habitat that allows them to climb, while others will need to swim, burrow, or bask. Find out how much room your pet will need, and what type of housing is required.

Diet

Feeding an exotic pet is generally more complicated than grabbing canned food from a nearby convenience store or grocery. What’s on the menu? It could be anything from pinkie mice to live roaches. (This, understandably, can be a dealbreaker for anyone who’s a bit squeamish.) Some exotics eat mostly fruits and veggies. This is easier, but it does entail more prep work and, often, higher costs.

Temperature

Many exotic pets have adapted to thrive in very specific environments, and will require certain light, heat, and/or humidity levels. This means they need customized habitats, which may require special equipment.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of exotic pets varies widely. Do some research before adopting. Don’t proceed unless you can commit to caring for your new pet for their entire lifespan!

Disease

It’s important to understand that some exotic pets may carry certain diseases. Turtles, for instance, carry salmonella. Fortunately, in most cases, you’ll lower or remove your risk just by practicing good hygiene and washing your hands after handling your pet. However, this could be an issue for anyone who has a weak immune system.

Size

Have you ever seen news stories about how anacondas are wreaking havoc in the Everglades? Many were once pets but were released when they got too large. Case in point.

Legal Issues

Rules on keeping exotic pets differ drastically between different states, cities, and even HOAs. This is also something to think about, especially if you may move down the road.

Veterinary Care

When you adopt a pet, you’re committing to providing it a loving home and proper veterinary care. You’ll need a great veterinarian on your team to help you keep that promise. Not all veterinary clinics handle exotics, so you may need to shop around.
