Summer is officially upon us. The hot weather can be rough on our canine buddies. After all, Fido is wearing a fur coat! Actually, your pup’s fur may need some extra TLC at this time of year. A local Michigan City, IN vet offers some summer grooming care tips for dogs in this article.
Bathing
Fido may need some extra baths in summer, especially if he enjoys rolling around in dirt or mud. If you’re bathing your pooch more than usual, be sure to use a gentle soap, and don’t use too much of it. Otherwise, you could dry his fur out. The easiest option is to take your dog to the salon every few months. In between visits, keep him clean by hosing him off, using pet wipes, and brushing him.
Sunscreen
Did you know that our canine companions can get sunburns? Pale pooches and pups with thin fur are especially at risk. Ask your vet for tips on using sunscreen on your dog.
Clips
Many of our furry patients are more comfortable with a haircut in summer. If you’re not sure whether or not to clip your dog, ask your vet. Of course, if you do take Fido to the salon, there’s no reason you can’t have some fun with his new look. Have your furry buddy clipped to resemble a dinosaur or lion. You can also try out the trendy round dog haircut. Don’t be surprised if you giggle every time you look at your pet. This is just another way your canine pal will brighten up your days.
Nail Care
Paw care is very important at this time of year. Dogs can easily burn their feet on hot surfaces. This is especially important to keep in mind when taking your pup swimming. Fido’s paws are extra delicate when they are wet! Use paw balm to protect those furry feet. It’s also important to keep your pup’s nails clipped, so they don’t snag on things. If you’re uneasy about doing it yourself, just give us a call. We’re happy to help!
Swimming
Does your furry friend like swimming? Be sure to rinse Fido off when he gets out of the water, to get rid of chlorine, bleach, and other chemicals.
