Getting Your Dog Ready for Summer

Summer is just around the corner! As you start making plans, don’t forget to keep Fido in mind. Read on as a Michigan City, IN vet offers some tips on getting your pup ready for warm weather.

Beach Bag

Do you plan to hit your favorite swimming spot this summer? Pack a beach bag for Fido. You’ll want to include a towel, water bowls, sunscreen, paw balm, tie line, and a doggy lifejacket. It’s a good idea to put some treats in as well.

Do you have a yard for your canine buddy to run around in? Check for and remove any toxic plants growing on your property. The ASPCA has a good list here. Next, inspect your fencing, and address any loose or weak spots. If your pup has a doghouse, give it a good cleaning, and make sure there are no nails or sharp edges sticking out. You may also want to give the yard a pupgrade by adding some features that are fun for Fido, like a kiddie pool or outdoor toys. Make sure you have room for playing Fetch and Tag with your furry best friend!

Some of our canine pals will be more comfortable with a cute summer haircut. Fido may look adorable with a lion cut! He’ll also be much cooler. Just be sure to check with your vet first, as haircuts aren’t right for every dog.

Preventative Care

Fleas and ticks can not only make pets terribly itchy, they also carry deadly viruses and diseases. Make sure Fido is up to date on his vaccines and parasite control products. Your pooch should also be microchipped and wearing current ID tags.

Doggy On The Go

You may very well want to spend some time exploring parks or trails with your canine friend. Keep essentials, such as water and waste baggies, in your car at all times.

Cold Snacks

There’s no better way to cool off on a sweltering day than by enjoying a cold treat. Buy some doggy ice cream for Fido. Or, make homemade doggy snacks. Pour some sodium free broth over crushed up doggy treats or shredded meat. Use an ice cube tray or waxed paper cups. Then, freeze overnight. Instant tail wags!
