Have you recently adopted a rabbit? Floppy is a very cute little pet! If you’ve never had a bunny before, you’ll need to do a bit of research. Rabbits do have some fairly unique needs and characteristics. A Michigan City, IN vet offers some bunny care tips below.
Good Diet
Floppy’s diet should consist mostly of fresh grass hay. You’ll want to supplement this with commercial rabbit food, safe produce, and, of course, occasional treats. Not all foods are safe or suitable for bunnies, however. Do plenty of research and ask your vet for specific advice.
Plenty of Toys
Make sure that Floppy has lots of chew toys! This will not only keep your cute pet entertained, it’s also important for her dental health. Rabbits need to chew quite a bit to keep their teeth from overgrowing. Look online for easy DIY playthings.
Free Time
Floppy will need plenty of time out of her cage. We recommend giving rabbits several hours of recess every day. This is a great chance to spend time with your furry buddy! Pet her, play with her, and let her snooze on your lap if she wants.
Bunnyproofing
Bunnies have a knack for mischief! You’ll need to address or remove anything that could be dangerous. This includes things like toxic plants, chemicals, plastic bags and ties, and anything small or sharp. You’ll also need to treat or protect things like baseboards and furniture legs, and block off openings behind and beneath furniture and cabinets. Ask your vet for more information.
Expect Molts
Bunnies don’t shed hair continuously, the way dogs and cats do. Instead, they lose their entire coats at once. This is known as molting, and it can be a bit startling for those who aren’t expecting it. In other words, Floppy will more or less explode a few times a year, and grow new fur. You’ll need to brush your pet daily during molts. Your furry pal may also need to take hairball prevention formulas and/or certain supplements. (Tip: try using a squeegee or rubber dish glove to remove fur from carpets and upholstery.)
Prepare To Be Charmed
We probably don’t have to tell you this, but rabbits are very, very cute. You may be surprised at how quickly Floppy melts your heart!
