Taking Fido to the Park

Did you know that March 30th is one of Fido’s favorite days? It’s Take A Walk In The Park Day! Going to dog parks can be both fun and beneficial for dogs. This is a great way for your canine buddy to get his exercise, enjoy a change of scenery, sniff new grass, and hang out with his buddies. A local Michigan City, IN vet offers tips on taking your pooch to the park in this article.

ID

It’s always best to err on the side of caution. Make sure that your pet has been microchipped, and is wearing proper ID tags.

Preventative Care

Keeping up with your furry pal’s vaccines and parasite control products is very important. Dog parks can be hotspots for heartworms, as these parasites are transmitted from dog to dog by mosquitos. Keep copies of Fido’s paperwork in your glove compartment, or add them to an online drive or gallery you can access from your phone.

Water

Fido can get hot pretty quickly running and playing. Always bring water along for your four-legged friend. Consider getting him collapsible plastic dishes or a water bottle with an attached dispenser.

Food

Many dog parks have picnic tables where you can sit while your pup plays with his buddies. This may seem like a great spot for a picnic. However, be discreet with any food you bring with you, and don’t bring foods that give off strong scents. Otherwise, you may soon find yourself surrounded by a pack of hungry pooches!

Fido’s Playmates

Unfortunately, not every dog you find at a dog park will be well-behaved. Keep an eye out for dogs that are bullying other pups or acting aggressive. Female dogs in heat can also be problematic, as intact male dogs may fight over them. If you see any rowdiness or aggression, take Fido for a walk and then come back another day.

Waste

Always pick up after your canine companion. Many dog parks provide baggies, but bring some with you, just in case.

Double Duty

Do you take your furry friend to the groomer’s? Make it a habit to stop by the park on your way there or back. You and Fido will already be out and about!
