Beating Litterbox Smells

Kitties are quite easy to care for, which is one reason they are so popular. You won’t have rush home to walk Fluffy, as she can use a litterbox. However, while litterboxes are convenient, they don’t do much for your décor, and they can get, well, rather stinky. In this article, a Michigan City, IN vet offers some advice on keeping your pet’s purrsonal powder room looking—and smelling—fresh.

Cleaning

First and foremost, the best way to keep Fluffy’s bathroom from stinking is to simply clean it. We recommend scooping it out daily and changing the litter every week. You can buy litterboxes that make this task easier, such as stackable ‘sifting’ litterboxes or self-cleaning ones. Read reviews before buying, and ask your vet for advice.

Air Purifiers

A good air purifier is very helpful at beating pet odors. If you have a central unit, remember to change your filters regularly.

Deodorizers

There are now quite a few products on the market that are made for defeating litterbox odors, such as liners and powders. Baking soda will also help.

Plants

Plants are a great way to make your home look and smell good. They are also great at purifying the air. Just be sure to choose pet-safe ones. Boston ferns are a good choice for this! You can find more at the ASPCA site here.

Air Fresheners

You can find dozens, if not hundreds, of air fresheners on the market. Avoid the perfumed ones, as many of them just mask odors temporarily. Look for products that actually break down scent molecules.

Avoid Overcrowding

If you have more than one cat, you’ll need more than one litterbox. We recommend getting one litterbox per kitty, plus at least one extra.

Choose The Right Litter

Some litters are simply better at fighting smells than others are. Just keep your kitty’s preferences in mind. Some cats are quite purrticular about litter, and may prefer certain brands.

Diet

While it’s probably safe to say that Fluffy’s litterbox will never smell like roses, if it’s extremely stinky, there could be something going on with your pet’s digestion. Make sure your cat sees the vet regularly.

Ventilation

Ventilation is also important. If you put Fluffy’s box in a spare bathroom, keep the fan on in that room.
