Dogs are wonderful pets. They really don’t ask for much, either. Food, bedding, and veterinary care will cover your pet’s essential needs, while treats and belly rubs will keep that tail wagging. However, Fido needs more than that to thrive. In fact, many people overlook some crucial aspects of dog care. Here, a Michigan City, IN vet lists some common dog care mistakes.
Skipping Training
The purpose of training isn’t to teach your pup to be absolutely perfect at all times. It’s to ensure that you have control of Fido at all times. Make sure that your furry buddy knows basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. If you’re having a hard time, enlist your pup in obedience classes. It will be well worth the time and effort.
Not Doggyproofing
Our canine companions are both curious and opportunistic. This can be a dangerous combination! Make your home safe for Fido by removing or securing anything that you don’t want him playing with. This includes things like toxic plants, wires and cords, plastic bags, and small or sharp objects, as well as personal items, like phones and purses.
Being Inconsistent
Fido is very cute, and he knows it. However, don’t let that furry face sway you when it comes to setting rules. If you tell your pet not to beg one day, and then share your burger with him the next, you’re going to wind up with a spoiled pooch on your hands!
Not Enough Activity/Entertainment
Make sure your pup is getting enough activity and mental stimulation. Dogs that are bored and restless often channel their excess energy into making mischief. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Overfeeding
A significant number of our canine patients are overweight or obese. Fido will still be adorable with some extra pounds, but he’ll be much healthier staying near his ideal weight.
Punishment
Dogs aren’t perfect, any more than we are. Fido will make a mistake at some point. Don’t punish your pooch for misbehaving: this may just make matters worse! Focus on rewarding good behavior instead.
Lack of Dental Care
Doggy dental care is very important, but it’s often overlooked. Ask your vet for advice on taking care of your furry pal’s mouth!
