May 10th is National Hamster Day! These little guys are not as popular as dogs and cats, but they still make very cute and lovable little pets. Read on as a Michigan City, IN vet offers some tips on keeping a hamster happy.
Cage
A new cage is a great gift for your pet! Exact cage size requirements will depend on what type of hamster you have, so ask your vet for advice. As for bedding, opt for products made from cellulose or plant-based paper fibers. Avoid substrates made from wood, especially pine and cedar, as well as cat litter, corn cobs, newspaper, and anything perfumed. Hammie will also need a hidey-hole and a water bottle. Keeping the cage clean is important as well. Remove waste and uneaten food daily. Every week or so, do a more thorough deep cleaning.
Toys and Entertainment
Living in a cage can be boring, so make sure your cute little buddy has plenty of toys. Chew toys are very important, as they will help Hammie wear his teeth down. Many wood, wicker, and cardboard items are fine. (Tip: the cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls make great toys!) Your furry friend will also enjoy having an exercise wheel. Be sure to get a solid one: the wire ones can be dangerous. You may also want to get your pet a runabout. These can be fine, as long as you get the right size and supervise your pet closely. Ask your vet for more information.
Treats
Most pets love getting treats! Hamsters are no exception. You can treat your pint-sized pal to tiny bits of cheese, mealworms, or cooked egg or chicken. Fresh produce, such as apples, kale, and spinach, are also fine. Ask your vet for specific advice on safe and unsafe treats.
Location
Hamsters are nocturnal, so they sleep during the day. A child’s bedroom isn’t always the best place for them, as they may keep little ones awake at night. Hammie is also very sensitive to loud noises. Don’t put his cage near a TV or stereo, or in any other loud area. If you have dogs or cats, keep the hamster cage off the floor. Your tiny pet will get quite frightened if Fido and Fluffy keep staring at him!
