Did you know that February is officially Cat Health Month? Cats are quite independent, and are fairly easy to care for. However, Fluffy isn’t completely self-sufficient: she does need proper care in order to thrive. Read on as a Michigan City, IN vet offers some tips on keeping your kitty healthy.
Good Food
Proper nutrition is very important for your cat’s health and well-being. Make sure your kitty is eating good, nutritious food. Your cat’s nutritional needs will change as she ages, so be sure to consult your vet regularly.
Clean Litterbox
Cats hate dirty litterboxes, and who can blame them? We recommend scooping your furry pal’s litterbox out every day, and following up with more thorough cleanings once a week or so.
Veterinary Care
Coming to see us may not be Fluffy’s favorite thing to do, but it is absolutely crucial to her health and well-being. Most kitties should see us at least once a year, though some of our feline patients do need to come in more often. Ask your vet for specific recommendations. At home, watch for signs of sickness, such as hiding and poor grooming. Contact your vet right away if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
Safety
In many ways, cats are basically like furry little toddlers. Fluffy will often dive headfirst into mischief if given the chance. We recommend keeping your cat safe and sound inside, where she isn’t exposed to the dangers posed by cars, predators, weather, and other hazards. Petproofing is also important. Make your home safe for your kitty by removing or securing chemicals, medications, plastic bags and wrappers, cords and wires, toxic plants, and small or sharp objects.
Activity
While our feline friends do spend a rather ridiculous amount of time dozing, don’t let your kitty become a complete couch potato. Keep Fluffy active by providing her with lots of fun toys and playing with her regularly. Your furball will also benefit from having pet furniture that helps keep her active, such as a cat tower.
Purrs
Cats may have tried very hard to make us think they are cold and aloof, but our feline pals are actually very emotional. Make sure Fluffy feels loved by paying attention to her!
